Questions that have always kept me occupied are: “How does it work?” “How is it put together?” In FTC, I get to ask: “How can we make it work?” “How can we put it together?” While I have this more mechanical bent, I’m looking to stretch myself this year with FTC by gleaning a greater understanding of programming. My previous experience with FIRST was two years of FLL. To me, FIRST programs are about problem solving, but just as importantly, about communication, collaboration, and creativity. Building creative things is the heart of one of my personal passions, model railroading, where designing, drafting, and building models applies many of the same skills that building a robot does.

Abigail R.

My name is Abigail and I am 16 years old. I am a homeschooled 11th grader and the oldest of seven kids. I love being a part of FIRST because it equips me to be a problem solver and to have a humble and kind attitude in everything I do. I was in FLL for four years, mentored for one year, and am now in my first year of FTC. I love working with my teammates and listening to everyone’s ideas. I have learned that it’s important to respect each other and embrace each other’s differences. I enjoy initiating conversations among my team members so that we can get to know each other better. Some things I personally delight in doing are riding horses, doing calligraphy, and being at church.

Luke H.

As a homeschooled 16 year old, I am currently a junior in high school living with my parents, sister and dog. I have more hobbies than I have time for but to name a few I enjoy violin, tennis, 3D printing and modeling, robotics, baking, and aquariums. This past year, much of my energy has been poured into my growing love of 3D printing, which I hope will be a skill that will become useful in my future. As a result of my experience with 3D design and printing, I hope to pursue a career in engineering. Although this is my first year competing in any of the FIRST robotics competitions, I have experience in robotics from an internship at a tech start-up this summer. Through FIRST I hope to gain experience in collaborating with a team, and meet more people with interests similar to mine.

Titus R.

My name is Titus. I am fifteen years old and am in ninth grade. I have done FLL for five years, and this is my first year of FTC. I am really excited to be building metal robots. I am homeschooled, and my favorite subjects in school are math, science, and robotics. In my free time, I like to ride my bike and play with my six siblings. I love to take apart and fix things, and I have built a remote control boat out of leftover electronics. I am planning on going to UCI for college, and majoring in computer engineering. 2 Timothy 2:15 says, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” I want to show myself to God as one approved.
